IFT – Interfacility Transport (All Other Companies)
IFT agencies move patients between hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, specialty care units, and residences.
For new EMTs, IFT is often the BEST entry point into the EMS field, and here’s why:
Much more schedule flexibility
Easier to get part-time shifts if you’re in school
Can transition between full-time and part-time more easily
Consistent, predictable call types
A calmer pace that allows new EMTs to build confidence and communication skills
Ideal for students who do not want rigid bid or Kelly schedules
Excellent exposure to chronic care, CCT environments, and hospital operations
IFT allows you to master the fundamentals — patient movement, documentation, customer service, and teamwork — in a setting that supports both work and school. Many EMTs begin in IFT, gain experience, and then move into 911 work when they feel ready.
9-1-1 - Emergency Response (Falck & AMR)
These are the official 9-1-1 providers in the region. They respond to emergency calls, which often means:
Fast-paced, unpredictable call types
Operating as part of a medic–EMT team
Higher acuity patients
Less flexibility in scheduling
Traditional EMS bid systems or Kelly schedules
This pathway is ideal for EMTs who already know they want to move into paramedic school or pursue a long-term emergency medicine career.
If you’re brand new to EMS, working while in school, or want a more controlled introduction to patient care, IFT is highly recommended. If your long-term goal is paramedic school or emergency response, you can start in IFT and transition to 911 with a strong foundation already built
